Sun Sketches

Anyone out there listen to CBC's Vinyl Cafe? Ya, I do, I'm a CBC dork. Whatev.

Here are some pictures from Peck's camera on the trip, I think he has more to come.

The Fab Four at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The Nazi's used the Gate as their symbol, and it was also part of the Berlin Wall, cut off from East Berliner's by the death strip.

Here it is during the fall of the wall:During the walking tour in Berlin, note the unrestored buildings around, still waiting for the united Berlin to get to them after decades of neglect by the Communists:

The Sony Center in Berlin, pretty cool building, a piece of modern goodness: After a hockey game, why can't we get beers like this in dressing rooms in Canada? Oh ya, we're, we're influenced by the overbearing rules of the police state to the south of us. Loosen up Canada.
Team Canada and the Berlin police team, after an exhibition game. Jared and I (left back row) donned the Berlin jersies for this one:
Well earned:
Outdoor rink in Berlin... had the ice cooling system and everything... great idea. But it doesn't get that cold in Berlin, so I'm not sure this would be utilized in Calgary where it gets to -30...??

Amsterdam, local hangout. It was closed at the time we visited, but still posed for a pic:

CHICKENS!

Picture of somewhere in Europe on the only sunny day we had:
Well well well... I'm back in Egypt after the Euro vacation, and what a ride. I'd have to rate that trip as one of the best. The hockey was a fun excuse, but the highlights were definitely hanging out with Frank, Nabber and Peck and the good times we had together.

The Den Haag tournament went alright, we were poised to win the whole thing on the last day but the 9:00am game time got the better of us. I'm sure it had nothing to do with the four of us staying up until 5am, getting 2 hours of sleep, and then heading to the game. When the rest of the team showed up to the rink Peck, Frank and Nabber were asleep on the floor outside the dressing room looking like a sad, sorry crew. I was doing alright, still floating on the high from the previous night (not that high, a different kind of high). The game was back and forth, our goalie kept us in it, not allowing a goal through 2 and half periods. But we couldn't produce either, not enough quality chances were generated. It wasn't just our line misfiring either, the others all had a little Amsterdam'itis setting in... We eventually let one in off of a faceoff miscue in our own end that resulting in a shot from the point careening in. Unfortunately we didn't have enough gas to come back and succumbed to the team from San Diego.

But enough about hockey, or this may turn into a boring hockey and golf blog, we wouldn't want that now would we?

Back in Berlin we hung out a lot with Lee, a friend through a friend of Peck's who lives in Berlin while working on a PhD in political sciences... ya, I suppose you're wondering what we're doing hanging out with a guy like that... But it turns out he (or we) fit right in, and we ended up having a blast with him at the hockey games and more importantly afterwards... We also did the standard walking tour of Berlin in order to get a broad idea of the city's history. I'd been before in September, but the boys enjoyed it as well. We were supposed to leave Berlin Sunday after our last game in order to see some German or Dutch country side, but ended up staying until Tuesday on account of the fun we were having... or more likely that we slept through check out time and one of us had to get out of bed to beg to stay another day/night at the front desk. Good times... if anyone is in Berlin, the East Seven hostel is essentially a hotel and highly recommended. It's a great neighbourhood with a vibrant nightlife and close to all the sights. Brewer's walking tour also conveniently picks up there, and it led by some great tour guides.
Guess what this is:
Nicely translated:
We met some people from Hamburg along our travels, and they offered to show us a night out there if we wanted... so naturally we piled into the minivan and drove to Hamburg. Hamburg was a beautiful city, we pretty sure anyways. We were there for less than 24 hours and it dark for most of that. The Reeperbaun is something else though, for those that get to visit. Our hosts showed us a good time until after 5am... But we had to make our way to Amsterdam so that Frank could see it with his own eyes, unfortunately cutting our stay in Hamburg short.

Wednesday we were in DAM, that's local speak for Amsterdam I guess... With one night only we had to make the best of it. Although it was raining and cold, the DAM didn't disappoint. The bumper boat was invented, we bought a fist-trophy for our hockey team, and someone doubled down on a deuce.
What are all those red lights in the background?
Thursday we had a practice in Den Haag, so off we went. Our accommodation there rocked, we stayed at Hotel 't Centrum where we had been before, only this time we had a big apartment on the first floor to ourselves, complete with kitchen, fireplace, living/dining room, and big red curtains.

Hockey aside, Den Haag was epic. By far close to the best 4 days I've ever had. We frequented our regular haunt, where we've been going since 2006... Joep and Sus the bar owner/staff showed us a great time once again. We've gotten to know them so well we left our tab open from Thursday to Sunday, stopping in every night until 2am before heading out to another later night establishment. People in Den Haag are great, and it's a great city for both site seeing and making new friends.

On the night before our final hockey game we were planning on taking it easy... go out for a nice dinner with Fowler and Steph (fellow Calgarians on the hockey team), have "a couple" drinks, then get to bed before 2am in order to rest up for hockey at 9am. So we find a quiet restaurant, not only that they sit us upstairs away from everyone except an elderly couple on the other end... Everything is going as planned, I get the spicy ribs. We're drinking wine, being civilized... We should have known better. Up the stairs come 1, 2, 3, 4, then a 5th girl, the waiter sits them 20m from us. Oh great. The evening wears on... they have dinner, then out comes a birthday cake with a sparkler ablaze, they're singing to brunette... it's all downhill from here. We're in denial though, we order coffees after dinner, we have an early game in the morning. And then the birthday girl gets up, comes over to our table and says something incomprehensible. It was in Dutch. She sees our stupid looks and repeats herself in English... Would we like to request a song? She's collecting requests for the bartender to play... We're still not up to it, fumbling through the conversation with nothing better to offer than U2's Beautiful Day. She returns to her table, we look at each other, that was sad. Stephanie calls us losers.

We apologize to our hockey team and our "big game" in the morning before ordering 11 shooters from the waiter. On our way to their table we clear our throats and start in with the English version of happy birthday. I think they're appalled, but we find out afterwards it was "sweet"... Walking home at 5 in the morning after a nice crazy teenaged bar-top dancing (not us, them) to rehashed 90's dance music, turns out it was a beautiful day.

From Den Haag to Ghent, Belgium. On the way we drove through the Blizzard of '08, along the coastline of the Netherlands and Belgium... Saw the North Sea, drove over a big-ass bridge, through a 6.6km tunnel under the North Sea, waited for a boat at a bridge crossing, circled roundabouts like madmen, and made decent time if I don't say so myself.
Cool restaurant in Ghent, it used to be an old textile warehouse:
Ghent:St. Nicholas' church, ya, that St. Nick:Belgian beer of choice, Westmalle (Duble):This often overlooked medieval town was charming... We left Peck in charge of arranging our lodgings, which put us into a youth hostel eating breakfast with 10 year olds and sleeping on rubber mattresses that had no doubt been "wet" in the previous night. Just giving him a hard time, it wasn't that bad, and cheap too!
Two nights here, then off to Ypres/Ieper for a little WWI history and war memorial touring.
We stayed at a great B&B with the best hosts. They drove us to town at night, then picked us up in the eve. We witnessed the Last Post at the main gate to the city. The city performs this every night at 8pm to thank the Allies for liberating the city after WWI. They're the only city to do this... the only exception is during WWII when the occupying Germans prohibited it. But it was resumed on the very evening of liberation, September 6, 1944. Very special to witness, traffic is halted and school kids pack the area under the gate to witness it, every single day.
We did a driving tour through Flanders...

The largest Commonwealth war memorial in Europe (Tyne Cot Cemetery):"Real" trenches near Hill 62:The bunker where Canadian physician Lt. Col. John McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields on May 13, 1915, near the Essex Farm war cemetery:
From there we made our way to the bustling city of Tilburg... The 6th largest city (in 2006) in the Netherlands, Tilburg is the self-proclaimed wool capital of the Netherlands, giving birth to such famous people as Sebastiaan "Bas" Rutten. This was my last night in Holland and was spent in the company of great friends, both old and new.
Massive underground bike parkade. It was manned by security 24 hours who took your bike like you're checking your coat at a nightclub... and it was free. It was complete with a moving ramp (a la airport style), security, and Dutch girls (one in particular)! North America has so much to learn:
That about wraps it up... Thanks to my traveling companions, old friends, and all the new friends we met along the way.
And now I'm back in Egypt. Go Flames.

Europe Tour

I'm currently in Den Haag, in between hockey games... the tournament is going well, we're 2 and 1, but the loss was to some semi-pro team from the division above us.

Travelling Europe with Nabber, Frank, and Peck has been great too... the European roadtrip and international pub crawl style trip is a blast, as usual! Berlin was great, we met up with a friend of Peck's who showed us around and was a great host. We met some girls there too, who live in Hamburg, so after Berlin we drove to Hamburg for a night. Then it was off to Amsterdam to do the DAM thing there...

Now we're in Den Haag and will likely stay here until Monday then off somewhere else, so far we're thinking Belgium.

There, that wasn't about golf.

Company Tourney

A couple weeks ago I was charged with putting together the company golf tournament... It's coming up this Friday, . We have some cool prizes hooked up, and since there is only 20 players, half of which are not really golfers, I think my team will have a good chance at #1. That would be back to back victories in tournament play.. I'm looking forward to it.

On a shitty note, I'm missing the biggest tournament of the year on March 28-29. A two day pro-am at my home course because of the hockey trip to Europe. Oh well, the hockey trip will be way more fun, but still sucks to miss the tourney here...

Weekend Golf Tourney

Another weekend has passed, along with another couple rounds of golf. This weekend there was a tournament put on by the course, a 2 person best ball competition. My partner was the now infamous Tobias... we went head to head with our project manager and the other Swede, Jocke. It was a back and forth struggle but me and Tobias beat Jim and Jocke by one stroke, and then went on to place first in the tournament with a net score of 64. I contributed with a couple birdies, but overall all Tobias did most of the work...

Group Shot

Is that a camel in the back row? I'm lacking anything else witty to say after another 10 hour day. Too bad for you. Anyway, here's a group shot of all my KBR coworkers here on the Project:

An Ammonia Plant, you likey?

We had a professional photographer here last week who took a few thousand pictures of the site... So here are a few pictures of the ammonia plant we're buidling. Currently construction is 85% complete. The majority of the work remaining is electrical and instrumentation, and then commissioning/start-up (that's the hard part).

Here's the blurb from my resume: The EBIC ammonia plant complex located in the Suez Industrial Zone on the Red Sea is a grassroot installation of a 2000 MTPD ammonia plant based on KBR Advance Ammonia Process (KAAP) technology with supporting offsites/utilities, ammonia storage, and loading facilities.

Captain to 1st Mate: Ya, this looks like a good place to drop anchor...

Hey, the internet has been down the last few days due to a ship dropping its anchor one of the major communication cables that come from Italy to Alexandria (Egypt) on the sea floor... it knocked out 70% of Egypt's internet/long-distance and a bunch of other mid-east countries. Classic. So if you've sent an important email the last week you may want to re-send it if you were looking for a response...

Here's a few pics from the last few days... nothing too major to report, I've been BBQ'ing like it's goin' outta style... golfing,

Swede Week

Every week a new group of 30-50 Swedish golfers show up at Stella Di Mare. They come from October to March for winter golf since their country is snowed in, just like Canada. To greet them when they get here are temporary residents Jocke and Tobias, whom I can call my friends. They're the ones I've been playing squash, golfing, generally hanging out with since they arrived. Jocke (2nd from the right) is a golf pro who is here to give lessons to the guests, while Tobias (far right) is here to organise their tours, book golf, and general running around. They're both scratch or better and kick my ass on a regular basis. Tobias hits the ball around 300-320.... meters.

Anyways, usually their guests are 45+ year old couples, as you would expect golf tourists to be... but last week we were all pleasantly surprised by the arrival of a group of 3 30'ish girls, in conjunction with Tobias' best friend Jonas (far left) (3rd girl is still on the driving range warming when this pic was taken). So for the last week I've been hanging out with this group going for dinner (showing them around the area), playing pool, drunken after parties, coffee table bronc riding, and oh ya, a little golf mixed in too. It's been one of the best weeks since I've been here simply because there was a few people all looking to hangout and have fun. The girls and Jonas left yesterday and are already back at home and we've already f-booked and emailed.... Hopefully some more friends to keep in touch with in the years to come...

Cleanse Details

For those interested and have been asking about, here are the details of the cleanse I did...

Monday, January 21, 2008

First Supper

I've been doing a 10-day elderberry cleanse that ended on Saturday... I didn't eat anything for 7 days in the middle and only fruit/veggies on the first and last two days. The 7 days with no food was spent drinking elderberry juice, water, herbal teas, and herb vitamins. I had done a 5-day version a couple years ago and decided to try the 10-day'er. It was relatively easy and uneventful. I didn't get terribly hungry because you're always busy drinking the juice and making tea. Physically I was alright, golfing the usual amount and a game of squash with no issues. So all in all i don't want to say it was a waste of time, but I'm not sure exactly what I accomplished. Supposedly it cleans out your liver and kidneys and lungs and stuff, but whatever. I did sort of lose some evidence of one love handle, but not the other. So whoever will be holding on will have to use one hand like a bull rider, but that's ok.

Mom, for my first home cooked meal in the new apartment and my first real food in 10 days I bbq'd a chicken breast and made your pasta with olive oil, garlic, onions, and montreal steak spice. It was delish.

This week there is actually a few 21-30'ish people with one of the golf tour groups, so I've been coherting with them at night a bit. Last night we played pool until 2am, which didn't bode well for my 5:30am alarm clock and 8am meeting. But the moons were aligned and I couldn't turn down another Heineken.

Bizupt.

Virtual View

Here are some pictures from the balcony of the new pad... it overlooks the 13th green, which is looking a little brown these days due to it being the dead of winter... hah.

Looking right (west) up the 13th fairway:
Looking out the front door (north) over the wall... they use the property on the other side of the wall to dump pretty much everything from dirt to garbage, lovely view:
Looking northeast from the front door... the Red Sea in the distance:

Virtual Tour

Here's some inside pictures of the new pad... like I said before it's not that much bigger than the hotel room, but it's nice to able to cook for myself and kick back on a sofa... So far so good anyways, the change of scenery for the next 6 months will be worth it. The patio is the main attraction but I haven't cleaned it yet so no pics yet...

Moving Day

Well, I'm in. After 2 rounds of golf on Friday (80 & 82 if anyone cares) I set myself to the task of cleaning the apartment. 5 hours later and about 5 pounds of dust moved the place is essentially spotless, only a little more work on the kitchen. I moved most of the stuff I use regularly into the apartment and stayed there last night for the first time. The only drawback was the heater function on the airconditioner wasn't working. And last night it got down to 4 degrees C here. I wasn't the warmest under my meager Egyptian blankets, it reminded me of winter camping conditions...

I haven't had to go grocery shopping yet either... Today I started a 10 day cleanse. After a first day of fruit and veggies my diet will consist of Elderberry juice, tea, and herb/vitamin pills. This will give me some more time to start accumulating food and cooking stuff.

I'm going to head to Suez one of these days to pick up some things to make the place look a bit more "homey"... a couple rugs and sheesha smoking pillows outta do the trick.

Apartment Living

I've bit the bullet. I'm officially renting an apartment in one of the buildings on the golf course here, and will be moving some of my stuff from the hotel to the apartment. I have to keep the hotel room in order to still collect the living allowance from the company... I know I know, it sounds stupid, and let me confirm that it is. They pay upwards of $2000/mo for us to stay in the hotel, plus pay us the allowance. Meanwhile, they could rent us (or allow us) to rent apartments or villas outside of the hotel for much much less, but they don't. So anyway, I've rented this roof-top apartment to stay in some of the time, but mostly it'll be a place where we can get together outside of the hotel in order to BBQ, play poker, etc. Essentially a party-pad or clubhouse, or whatever you want to call it.

Here is a pic of the outside, from the golf course. I'll take more photos and maybe video once I'm fully moved in... Note, I only have the top floor. The apartment itself is relatively small with 1 bedroom, kitchen, bath, living room, but the patio is the main draw. I'm still waiting for some plumbing to be fixed before I move in, but it's coming... at Egyptian speed. ;)

Xmas is over

well... I'm in the calgary airport waiting for my flight to frankfurt. Its been a great couple of weeks spent with lots of family and friends... The time has flown by and ive decided 2 weeks in canada isnt enough ! Next project i work is going to have to have an 8 week on 3 week off schedule, that will be key. Highlights from the holidays include (in no particular order) turkey, snowmobiling/sleddin', ham, steaks, home cooked meals, family gatherings, seeing cousins all grown up (almost!) , iphone (using it right now), taylormade, new golf shoes, flames hockey games, the world juniors hockey tournament, tv, driving with incessant honking or light flashing, canadian beer (even the labatt lite in MB), malls, mom, dad, playing hockey, dressing room beers, new shoes, nellies' breakfasts, steak, snow!, NYE, handing egyptian presents to everyone, smiles, birthday dinner and drinks(wicked fun), movie theatres (and not having to pirate them!), large popcorn, large pop, wifi, and the list goes on... I hope everyone else out there had a good break and the new year has started well enough. I for one have already started planning/booking my next vacation!

As far as Egypt and the project goes i'm sure the next few months will fly by, i'm over half way!

quickie

have to apologize to all for not posting more lately... the internet has been rather shat in my room lately due to the hotel being their usual helpful selves. i'm basically counting down the days until i leave for canada on the 19th... spending a week in Manitoba with dad and that side of the family, then a week in Calgary for the rest... looking forward to home cooked meals, family, friends, relaxing, shivering, snow shoveling, ice scraping, thawing toes, etc etc...

nye is at the sue bar again this year... after spending last nye the same way and ending up swimming in a hotel's pool in my underwear with Frank and 2 girls this year should be interesting. weeeeeeeeeee....
